Summary
The SSF was launched in April 2021. It is recognised as a dual commodity framework, reporting equally on the production of sheepmeat and wool. The development process of the SSF involved identification and quantification of industry impacts on sustainability, extensive consultation with industry stakeholders, expert guidance on indicator and metric development and industry approval.
The SSF’s first Strategic Plan FY2022–FY2024 was developed with an emphasis on embedding the SSF into the Australian sheep industry. Since this time, the SSF has significantly matured and therefore, sought to develop its next five-year Strategic Plan to support and guide its ongoing development.
Objectives
Through extensive stakeholder consultation and desktop review, develop and deliver a detailed and articulate Strategic Plan to set the direction and activities of the SSF for the next five years.
Key findings
The SSF Strategic Plan has set a clear direction for the framework to progress in its key strategic areas of stakeholder engagement, data collection and reporting, and responsiveness to industry needs.
In addition, the Strategic Plan has a series of key performance indicators that can be utilised to monitor the Framework's progress and effectiveness in reporting on the sustainability position of the Australian sheep industry.
Benefits to industry
The SSF can be used by industry to help protect and grow access to investment, finance, customers and markets by providing credible evidence of performance and improvement. Further, individual enterprises may use the Framework to understand the industry’s material issues and consider these in their forward planning.
MLA action
MLA utilises data and trends gathered through the SSF to identify opportunities on-farm, in transport, processing, and at the customer interface where practices can be improved by both the industry and individuals.
Future research
The Strategic Plan will guide the development of the SSF for the next five years. After this time, its future goals and ambitions will need to be redefined.
